Chapter Fourteen

I yawned and stretched before opening my eyes. My whole body seemed to ache and I still had sand in places I definitely didn’t want it, but Zephyr and I were still alive, and together.

The dragon was still asleep beside me, as were most of the fire salamanders. Minsheng smiled as I sat up. Daisy and Chris were nowhere to be seen.

When I noticed that Minsheng had one of his books open on his lap, I scooted over to see what he was reading. No doubt it would be something he thought might help us in our present situation.

After getting away from the agents that morning, Chris had found a quiet place to park and let everyone get some sleep. It was now at least afternoon, but I couldn’t be sure when exactly.

Before I could say anything to Minsheng my stomach rumbled, making it clear I was starving.

“Daisy and Chris have gone to get us supplies again,” Minsheng whispered.

“Wonderful,” I replied as Newton stirred as well. He hopped up into my lap and cozied up.

Slowly stroking him, I sat back and looked at the book in Minsheng’s hands. It was the one on Tuviel and Azargad. I’d looked at it several times, but Minsheng had already seemed to know it by heart.

“What are you looking for?” I asked. “Anything helpful?”

He flicked back to where he’d put his thumb to mark a page. It was one of the illustrated pages, where someone had drawn Tuviel and Azargad together in the air, the elven warrior riding on his back.

“It’s the only picture I can find with that necklace in it,” Minsheng said. “Near the end of their time together. But I can’t find any mention of it. I know they have their secrets, and the organization does too, but I thought there would be some information somewhere on what that thing can do.”

“Did Tuviel not say?”

“She lived a very long time ago. It’s possible everyone then knew what it could do, but no one thought it was worth mentioning.”

“It helps me and Zephyr talk to each other,” I replied, not sure if that was the sort of thing Minsheng meant. I didn’t know if it needed to do anything else. Being able to communicate with Zephyr, even if it was only in our minds, was the icing on the cake of the bond we already shared. I was already so used to it.

“I think it does more than enable telepathy. You’ve both been different since you put the necklace on. As if it enhances all elements of the bond between you both.”

I nodded. It made sense. I’d been able to feel his presence so much more. And it turned out, I could feel his pain. We were more linked than I’d have thought possible.

“Although I trust the organization, I’m concerned too. Tuviel only gained it later in her journey. It doesn’t say how long she lived afterward.”

“Why am I sensing that there’s a big but coming?” I asked, noticing several more of the salamanders wake up until just grandma salamander and Zephyr were still asleep.
